Dual Immersion Program

About the Program

Established in 1998, Banning Unified School District was the first school district in Riverside County to develop a Dual Immersion program. The two-way language Immersion program provides students the opportunity to become bi-literate, bilingual and bi-cultural in Spanish and English.

Program Goals

All students will develop high levels of proficiency and fluency in their first language.

All students will develop high levels of proficiency and fluency in a second language.

All students will perform and achieve academically in all core content areas according to district and state guidelines.

All students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes, inspire self-efficacy and strengthen positive attitudes and behaviors among students, their families, and the community.

The ultimate goal for Banning USD's Dual Immersion students to graduate with the recognition of the California Seal of Biliteracy.

Program Overview

Program Model 

  • Grades TK-2: 

    • All core content is taught in Spanish

    • English Language Development (ELD) is provided daily, using the Common Core State ELD Standards

    • Time split is TK-1 is 90/10 and 2nd grade is 80/20 Spanish/English (Phonics and Phonemic Awareness instruction in English begins in the second trimester of 2nd grade)


  • Grades 3-4: 

    • Formal literacy in English is introduced; Spanish literacy is maintained

    • English Language Development (ELD) is provided, daily using the Common Core State ELD Standards 

    • Other content areas are taught in Spanish 

    • Time Split is 3rd grade 70/30 and 4th grade is 60/40 Spanish/English

  • Grade 5: 

    • There is a continued emphasis on English Language Development (ELD) and academic vocabulary

    • Language Arts and Math continues to be addressed in both languages 

    • High academic and linguistic expectations are in place

    • The time split for 5th grade is 50/50 Spanish/English

  • Grades 6 - 8: 

    • Two core subjects are taught in Spanish at each grade level 

      • 6th grade -  Math and Science  

      • 7th grade - Math and Science  

      • 8th grade - Math and Science  

  • Grades 9-12: 

    • Students take Spanish Elective courses in High School

      • AP Spanish Language and Culture (9th Grade)

      • AP Literature. (10th Grade)

      • MSJC Dual Enrollment Spanish 101 (11th Grade - Semester 1)

      • MSJC Dual Enrollment Spanish 102 (11th Grade - Semester 2)

How to Enroll

During the student enrollment process, parents/guardians will have the opportunity to indicate their interest in enrolling their child in the Dual Immersion Program.

Open enrollment for the Banning Unified School District begins on March 1st:

  • Dual Immersion Program (Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten) at Central Elementary School

Please note that entry into the Dual Language Immersion Program is only available at the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten levels. Exceptions may be made for students in grades 1st through 5th if they have been previously enrolled in a Dual Language Immersion program at another district and space is available.

Step by Step Guide

If you are interested in enrolling your student in the program, please follow the next steps:

Step 1 | Enroll in the Banning Unified School District
If your child is already enrolled, proceed to the next step. Do NOT re-enroll

Step 2 | Select Dual Immersion Interest on online Open Enrollment Form

Step 3 | Complete Home Language Survey
Students identified as speaking a language other than English on the Home Language Survey are assessed as part of the open enrollment process.

Step 4 | Attend the mandatory "Informational Meeting"
Parents/Guardians who complete the Dual Language Immersion Program interest form will receive an email with details about the mandatory informational meeting. Please note that attending the meeting does not guarantee acceptance into the program due to limited program capacity.
